Social Networks, Social Capital, and Social Outcomes
This video from a social networks course in the sociology program at the University of Maine at Augusta considers the implications of structures of networks for social capital and the tendency of some communities to be able to achieve the kind of communities they desire while other communities struggle. Bridging social capital and bonding social capital, two very different advantages of connection, are introduced as part of a review of Robert Putnam's 2000 work Bowling Alone. The video concludes with a consideration of evidence presented by Putnam and updated with more recent evidence to ask what outcomes are produced by different kinds of social capital and what disturbing and reassuring trends in American social capital have emerged.

Why Research Methods? An Answer Drawing from Umwelt, Vorhandenheit, and Zuhandenheit
Переглядів 1005 місяців тому
This video, shot for undergraduate social science research methods students at the beginning of the semester, asks the question, "why bother with research methods?" The answer provided by this video (one of many possible answers) starts with Ed Yong's example of the Jakob von Uexkull's "umwelt" (surrounding world of perception) of different animals including humans, and turns to Martin Heidegge...
What does Public Higher Education as a Public Investment for the Public Good look like?
Переглядів 476 місяців тому
There are two competing models of higher education today: one supposes that education is a private good accruing to the student as a private customer for their own private benefit gaining compensation from a private employer who uses them as a tool for private good. The other model imagines education as a public investment for the public good. Associate Professor of Sociology James Cook briefly...
Deaths, Counts, and Cultural Significance of Maine's Mass Shooting

If we literally compare of the numbers who died in the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine to the numbers of those who die in other ways in Maine every year, it's not clear why a mass shooting in Maine strikes so many as significant. This doesn't mean at all that the shooting in Maine was insignificant. Instead, it means that in order to find the event's significance we need to look beyond mere co...
Education as a Public Good

In Fall 2023, the University of Maine at Augusta opened its academic year by declaring a theme for the year: "Education as a Public Good." Research Makes Sociology Distinctive
Переглядів 1469 місяців тому
There are many academic disciplines that touch on issues related to the social world: identity studies, philosophy, literature, and art among them. What makes sociology distinctive from these other disciplines? Research. Sociologists are researchers, which means we base our claims on systematic empirical observation of the world. We think in terms of variables and seek general explanations. Res...

      Martin, unfortunately, this represents a rejection of the script in Twitter's API interface: the last 7 years have had a lot of changes in Twitter's architecture, which is why the script no longer functions.

      Hi, Jamal. It's hard to be sure without all the details that came along with that error, but I can give you a few suggestions. There should be a "learn more" or "error details" or similar link that comes with that prompt. Click on it for details. This is an error that can occur when the link in your script doesn't match the link in your UA-cam Google Cloud Project that you got when you got yourself a UA-cam API Key (see here -- ua-cam.com/video/of0nzBJrT20/v-deo.html -- if you haven't completed that step successfully).

    This is a great lecture. Is there a go to textbook that captures all of this. I’m not a sociology student but a PhD economics student that has a sociological focus too but couldn’t identify 1 textbook that is comprehensive enough

    • @JamesCookUMA
      @JamesCookUMA 2 місяці тому

      Thanks, Sinyorimparatore. In my judgment, there isn't a single textbook that accomplishes this for sociology. SOC 101 texts unfortunately don't communicate sociology as it's carried out by sociologists in their research. Instead, they read as fairly uniform "social studies" texts to accomplish general education goals.

      Sadly (but understandably), Reddit limits the amount of information that one can obtain through methods like these. I've seen examples in a low-communication subreddit where it's possible to go back a few months, but in high-communication subreddits your search may obtain only a few weeks' worth of information. Pushshift has some stored data here -- academictorrents.com/details/89d24ff9d5fbc1efcdaf9d7689d72b7548f699fc -- but use at your own risk.

    • @JamesCookUMA
      @JamesCookUMA 4 місяці тому

      Hi! Two points: 1) yes, Reddit sometimes returns interesting results like that; it's important to examine and sort through data to ensure that you have the information collected within the bounds that you'd intended to collect. 2) data with different dates can appear because the posts are what's selected, and then comments are collected that are associated with the posts.

      Hi, Antonin. There are many possibilities, and without looking at your script I can't say for sure what might be going on with you. Perhaps the top possibility is that what you're looking for is simply less frequent in occurrence. If this is what's happening, consider changing the period="day" option to period="week" and seeing what happens.
